Synology Assistant Help
Synology Assistant is an application which is used to find your server, Synology DiskStation, on a local area network, install firmware onto Synology DiskStation, and provide assistance for mapping printers and drives (Windows only). You can also upload photos, setup WOL, and monitor Synology DiskStation resources with Synology Assistant.

Starting Service The system startup process is as follows:

Management
You can view a complete server list within the local area network on the Management page.
Update the Server List
- Click Search to update the server list.
Connect to a Server
You can connect to a server by one of the following methods. Then a browser will take you to Synology DiskStation Manager login page when a server is connected.
- Select a server from the server list and click Connect.
- Double-click on the server from the list.
Map Drive
You can map a shared folder as a network drive and access it as an internal drive on your local computer.
- Select a server from the server list and click Map Drive.
- Follow the Setup Wizard to complete the setup.
Add a Printer
You can add a network printer by connecting a USB printer to a server.
- Connect a USB printer to a server.
- Select the server from the list and click Add Printer.
- Follow the Setup Wizard to complete the setup.
Set Up Resource Monitor
You can monitor your server’s CPU usage, memory usage, network flow, and volume usage on the Resource Monitor page.
- Select a server from the server list and click Set Up Resource Monitor.
- Follow the Setup Wizard to complete the setup.

Set Up Photo Uploader
You can upload photos or videos to Photo Station via Photo Uploader.
- Select a server from the server list and click Set Up Photo Uploader.
- Follow the Setup Wizard to complete the setup.
- Refer to Photo Uploader section for more information.
Set Up WOL
You can set up WOL to wake up your server remotely.
- Select a server from the server list and click Set Up WOL.
- Follow the Setup Wizard to complete the setup.

Installation
You can monitor the progress of firmware installation on the Installation page.
Install Firmware
- On the Management page, double-click a server labeled as Not Installed or Configuration Lost under the Status column of the server list.
- Follow the Setup Wizard to initialize the setup process.
You will be taken to the Installation page once the installation begins. The left section shows the server name and installation progress. The right section shows the detail of the installation process. Return to the Management page to connect to the server after installation is complete.
Clear Finished Installation
You can clear the finished installations by clicking Clear.
Cancel Installation
During the installation process, you can abort the installation by clicking Cancel.

Resource Monitor
Resource Monitor can help you monitor your server’s resources, including CPU Usage, Memory Usage, LAN , and Volume usage.
Add a Server to Monitor its Resources
There are two ways to monitor the resources of your server.
Method 1:
- On the Management page, select a server from the server list and click Set Up Resource Monitor.
- Follow the Setup Wizard to complete the setup. The network settings for the selected server will be filled out automatically.
Method 2:
- On the Resource Monitor page, click Add to open the Setup Wizard.
- Follow the Setup Wizard to complete the setup. You will need to enter the network settings for your server manually.
Note:
- If you want to monitor the resources of a server outside your local area network, please use Method 2 and enter the network settings manually.
- Only admin can add a server to monitor its resources.
- Resource Monitor is available only on Synology DiskStation with firmware DSM2.2-0914 and onward.
Remove or Edit a Server
- On the Resource Monitor page, select a server from the left section.
- Click Remove or Edit.
Monitor Resources
You can monitor the following resources by selecting a server on the Resource Monitor page.
- CPU Usage: You can monitor the overall CPU usage of your server.
- Memory Usage: You can monitor the overall memory usage of your server.
- LAN: You can monitor the overall network flow for each LAN Port. The red line represents the incoming network flow to the server, whereas the green line represents the outgoing network flow from the server.
- Volume: You can monitor the available space in each volume. The pink area represents unused space in the volume, whereas the blue area represents used space.
Stop Monitoring a Server
- On the Resource Monitor page, select a server from the left section.
- Click Disconnect to stop monitoring its resources. The green indicator next to the server will turn red after it is disconnected. You can click Connect and re-enter the password to resume monitoring the server.
Note: When you launch Synology Assistant, it will collect the resource data automatically, but the data will be deleted when you stop monitoring a server or exit Synology Assistant.

Photo Uploader
Photo Uploader can help you upload photos or videos to Photo Station more easily.
Before uploading, you need to set up a profile. The profile contains the network settings of your server and your Photo Station’s account information. You can use the profile to upload photos or videos to Photo Station.
Add Profile
There are two easy ways to set up a Photo Uploader profile.
Method 1:
- On the Management page, select a server from the server list.
- Click Set Up Photo Uploader to open the Setup Wizard.
- Follow the Setup Wizard to set up your profile. The network settings for the selected server will be filled out automatically.
Method 2:
- On the Photo Uploader page, click Add to open the Setup Wizard.
- Follow the Setup Wizard to set up your profile. You will need to enter the network settings for your server manually.
Note:
- If an alert message says the profile name already exists, it means another profile with the same name is used for your Photo Uploader. Please rename your profile before proceeding.
- If you want to upload contents to a server outside your local area network, please use Method 2 and manually enter the network settings.
- Your account must have the upload privilege. Please check your account privilege in Photo Station’s Settings page, or contact your Synology DiskStation’s administrator.
Remove or Edit Profile
- On the Photo Uploader page, select a profile from the left section.
- Click Remove or Edit.
Upload Photos and Videos
- On the Photo Uploader page, select your profile from the left section.
- Click Connect and enter your password for the Photo Station account.
- Choose a destination for uploading.
- In the Contents to Upload area, click Add File or Add Folder to add contents to upload, or click Remove to remove the selected files or folders from the upload list. You can select a photo or a video to see its preview in the Thumbnail area.
- Choose an action from the If file already exists drop-down menu.
- Select video conversion settings. You can view uploaded videos of different qualities (in H.264 format) on Photo Station if you select more than one option here.
- Click Upload to start uploading. Photo Uploader will create thumbnails and compress videos (if any) during the uploading process.
- After the uploading process is complete, click Yes in the dialog that appears to view the uploaded albums on Photo Station homepage.
Note: Photo Uploader is available only on Synology DiskStation with firmware DSM2.3-1090 and onward.

WOL
You can turn on a server remotely by setting up its WOL(Wake on LAN) function.
Set Up WOL within LAN
- On the Management page, select a server from the server list and click Set Up WOL. The pop-up box will display the network type and the MAC address of the server.
- Tick the Wake up the server checkbox to turn on the server immediately after WOL setup.
- Click OK to complete the setup.
- The server’s WOL status will change to “WOL” on the Management page.
Note:
- Not all Synology DiskStations support WOL function. Refer to the WOL Status Table for more information.
- You can also right-click a server and choose WOL > Set Up.
- You can set up WOL for multiple servers by pressing “Shift” or “Ctrl”. The system will skip the dialog box and add all selected servers onto WOL list immediately.
Wake Up a Server
- On the Mangement page, right-click the server you want to turn on from the server list, and then choose WOL > Wake Up.
- The server’s WOL Status will change to “Progress X%”, indicating the wake up progress.
When WOL is complete, the WOL status will change to “WOL”. Refer to the WOL Status Table for more information.

Remove WOL function for a Server
- On the Management page, right-click the server you want to remove its WOL function from the server list, and then choose WOL > Remove.
- The WOL status of the server will change to “--”.

Preferences
You can click the Preferences button (with the gear icon) to set up the following settings.
- Select a default startup page: Synology Assistant will enter the page (Management or Resource Monitor) after startup based on your selection here.
- Language: Choose a default language shown in Synology Assistant’s user interface. You will need to restart Synology Assistant before the new setting takes effect.
- Memory Test: If you tick the checkbox, when you launch Synology Assistant next time, the Memory Test button will appear on the Management page. You can select a server and click the button to perform memory diagnostic test on the selected server. The server will be rebooted and start the test, and the testing progress will be shown in the Status column of the server list.
Note:
- It might take from minutes to hours for the memory test to finish, depending on the physical memory size of your server. During the test, any access to the server will be denied.
- Memory Test is available only on Synology DiskStation with firmware DSM2.2-0914 and onward.
